Earth, a natural choice

Containers (called crystalline) made of terracotta, natural stoneware, technical ceramics or granite are ideal for aging wines, beers, spirits, as well as ciders and meads, while allowing you to use fewer additives.

 

Their porosity provides regular oxygenation , like an oak barrel, but unlike the latter, it does not impart any additional taste or odour.

Amphorae and jars

Amphorae are often mentioned when discussing aging or vinification in ceramic containers.

 

In reality, it is more appropriate to speak of jars, as an amphora is merely a small chapter in the long history of the jar—a large clay vessel with a wide opening, an ovoid shape, and no handles.

 

As for the amphora, which appeared in the 3rd–4th millennium BCE, it is a two-handled vessel, typically ending at the lower part with a pointed base or a narrow foot, primarily used for transporting and storing goods. Designed for single-use, the amphora was essentially the ancient equivalent of today's bottle.
